NürnbergMesse heading for revenue and profit jump
  • Final spurt for the 47-million-euro investment in the new Mitte entrance and congress area
NürnbergMesse is heading for an appreciable jump in revenue and profit in the current event year. "We expect revenue to increase to more than 180 million euros and profit to top seven million euros. It is notable that revenues are only growing by around six per cent above plan, whereas the annual result is expected to improve by an impressive 18 per cent," says a satisfied Bernd A. Diederichs, Managing Director of NürnbergMesse. This jump in profit means that NürnbergMesse has finally defied the economic crisis and at the same time smoothed out the result of 2009, a weaker financial year due event cycles. With revenues of 133 million euros in 2009, NürnbergMesse recorded a loss of 6.2 million euros, which was nevertheless 1.4 million euros better than originally planned and feared.

Despite the foreseeable record result for 2010, the impacts of the global economic and financial crisis on the exhibitions in the first half-year are visible. After all, the budgets of the exhibiting and visiting industry for exhibitions in 2010 originate from the second half of 2009. "Optimism took a break at that time," says Diederichs looking back. As a result, two of the three key exhibition figures for own and partner events at the Nürnberg location in the first half of 2010 are down slightly: two per cent less exhibitors and three per cent less net space. The trade visitors opposed this trend and grew by two per cent.

Diederichs expects a further recovery for the second half-year. "We are in the middle of the strongest event year in the history of NürnbergMesse. All the large exhibitions are taking place as scheduled, none of them are taking a break," says Diederichs explaining the foreseeable record result.

2009: international business improves result
"The acquisition of NürnbergMesse Brasil in April 2009 was a real stroke of luck and has contributed substantially towards reducing the planned loss of 7.6 million euros by an appreciable 18 per cent to 6.2 million euros," says Diederichs.

The purchase had an even more positive effect on the international revenue of the NürnbergMesse Group, which improved by more than 75 per cent over 2008 to some 15 million euros. "Despite this growth, we still produce almost 90 per cent of our revenues at the Nürnberg exhibition and congress venue," emphasized the head of NürnbergMesse.

In the weaker financial year 2009 with fewer scheduled events, altogether 162 events (2008: 173) took place in Germany and abroad, with 24,628 exhibitors (2008: 27,128) and 1.1 million visitors (2008: 1.3 million). The revenue of the NürnbergMesse Group was some 133 million euros (2008:153 million), which made it the second largest in the history of the company. "This stable development offers an outstanding basis for our future growth in Germany and abroad," says Diederichs summing up the crisis year 2009.

2010: personnel expansion to shoulder growth and new projects
NürnbergMesse is growing - in terms of revenue, profit and personnel. "We're at our limits," says Diederichs, and has therefore obtained the go-ahead from the supervisory board of NürnbergMesse to recruit extra personnel to cope with further growth and the many new projects. Filling existing vacancies and new jobs together make up a current need for 20 persons. NürnbergMesse will also welcome 13 new apprentices and trainees in September, which will maintain the training quota of over 12 per cent at the Nürnberg location. "At the end of the year, altogether more than 360 colleagues will be working to continue the success and growth of the NürnbergMesse Group," says Diederichs looking ahead.

The two most important new projects this year are taking the new Mitte (central) entrance and congress area into service and the expansion of the exhibition portfolio in India with the aim of establishing another subsidiary there in the medium term. The investment volumes of these two projects could not be more different, however. Whereas some 47 million euros are estimated for the new entrance and congress area in Nürnberg (Diederichs: "The new visiting card for the Nürnberg exhibition and congress venue!"), the commitment in India amounts to only a few hundred thousand euros. "We have two big advantages in India: We are not investing in an exhibition site and we are not buying any new events either, at least, not at the moment," says Diederichs. Instead, the existing portfolio in India is being enhanced with one event of our own (fensterbau/frontale India) and an organization contract (ACREX India). Both exhibitions have a direct connection with the portfolio at our home venue in Nürnberg: with fensterbau/frontale (window and facade technology) and Chillventa (refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technology). If success is foreseeable, Bernd A. Diederichs will propose to the supervisory board of NürnbergMesse that another subsidiary be set up. India would be the fifth international subsidiary of NürnbergMesse after China, North America, Brazil and Italy.
