Digital Nuremberg

With renowned companies, a lively start-up scene and leading trade fairs, Nuremberg has developed into a centre of digitalisation in Germany.

"Challenge accepted" is the motto for digital Nuremberg. Since spring 2018, the Franconian metropolis has been one of 41 cities in Europe participating in the European Commission's "Digital Cities Challenge". The aim of the programme is to make Europe's cities more liveable, productive and innovative with the help of digitalisation.

In an application process, the Commission has selected 15 "Challenge Cities" from all over Europe. A further 20 "Fellow Cities" - including Nuremberg - were invited to participate in the digital transformation initiative. In exchange with six "Mentor Cities" and experienced experts, the cities want to share their digital success concepts with each other. The aim is to find answers to social challenges in the areas of health management, the environment, mobility and the labor market.

Hotspot on the digital map

Nuremberg can contribute several success stories to the circle of European digital hotspots. The former industrial city has successfully transformed itself into an important location for digitalization. With more than 100,000 employees in 7,000 companies, the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is one of the leading ICT locations in Europe. Well-known companies such as Datev or Siemens and research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute are driving digitization forward. An overview of the various players and initiatives is provided by the "Digital Nuremberg" website and the "Business Blog".

Companies can find the young talent they need for a sustainable digital transformation at several universities in the region and in an active start-up scene. This is networked in several start-up centers, such as the tech incubator ZOLLHOF. There, around 20 employees look after more than 30 tech start-ups. They benefit from the experience of the experts and a large network.

Trade Fairs and Digital Summit 2018

Nuremberg is an established meeting place for the innovation drivers of digitalization because of the leading trade fairs on digital topics. At embedded world, it-sa or SPS IPC Drives, international experts discuss the key technologies of digitalization: embedded systems, IT security and automation technology/industry 4.0.

NürnbergMesse: Leading trade fairs on the key technologies of digitalization.

"Nuremberg has been accompanying the digital transformation for years as the host of important trade fairs and congresses from the IT and electronics sectors," says Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier. This is another reason why NürnbergMesse has recommended itself as the venue for the Federal Government's Digital Summit 2018 on 3 and 4 December. The "challenge" of the around 1,000 experts is: to fill the cooperation between politics, business, science and society in shaping the digital transformation with life and ideas.
