Smart cities are cities that use technological solutions to make everyday life easier for their citizens. In Germany, 81 major cities with over 100,000 inhabitants are included in the assessment, which is carried out annually by the IT industry association Bitkom. The Smart City Index uses no fewer than 11,000 data points in the areas of administration, IT and communication, energy and the environment, mobility and society to measure progress in digitalization.
Nuremberg's rise from 16th to sixth place in the latest ranking is primarily due to its top ranking in the areas of administration and mobility. “With a consistent digitalization strategy, the city administration has already set the course for this in 2018,” emphasizes Lord Mayor Marcus König.
In the area of mobility, the city scored points with smart solutions in local public transport and intelligent traffic lights, which are increasingly being used in the trade fair area. The very high traffic peaks before, during and after trade fairs are absorbed by one of the most modern control systems in Germany. “The direction with the most traffic is given priority,” says Frank Jülich, Head of Traffic Planning Office Nuremberg, ‘we can equalize, guide, direct’.
Intelligent exhibition logistics
This is exactly where NürnbergMesse came in with the development of digital exhibition logistics. The intelligent truck call-off system organizes the flow of traffic around the exhibition grounds using time slots that are booked digitally. This saves customers time and money, relieves traffic around the exhibition grounds and reduces CO2 emissions. Algorithms ensure that the process is constantly optimized.
Digital exhibition hotspot
NürnbergMesse has been digitally positioned for many years with the leading trade fairs embedded world, it-sa and SPS as an established meeting place for developers, security experts and the automation technology industry. This is where experts discuss key technologies, innovative products become accessible to visitors and trends are presented for the first time.
With the rapidly advancing digital transformation, the trade fair has also made its own portfolio even more attractive. The development of digital and hybrid formats brings clear added value for exhibitors, visitors and potential customers. Around XXX participants took part in hybrid trade fair formats in 2022. At the same time, the new processes, structures, tools and systems create high-quality jobs for digital-savvy people.
