Ciao, Stefania: An era comes to an end

No one knows the Italian trade fair business like she does. Stefania Calcaterra, a native of Milan, has been involved in the trade fair industry for almost 40 years - 25 of them with the NürnbergMesse Group. Now, after 16 years as managing director of the Italian subsidiary, she is stepping down - an era is coming to an end.

A woman is sitting at a table with a microphone in front of her. There is also a name tag with the name “Stefania Calcaterra” and a bottle of water on the table.

The beginning: When the spark ignites

“Why not?” Stefania Calcaterra said to herself in the late 1990s when Bernd A. Diederichs, an Italophile and then managing director of NürnbergMesse, sought to recruit her for the company. The two had known each other for 13 years through their involvement with Messe Frankfurt. The spark had been ignited. Alone in a small office in Milan, she threw herself headlong into the NurembergMesse adventure in 1999. She was supported by Marcello Raille, who was then head of the Italian foreign representative office in Munich.
With a mixture of curiosity and enthusiasm, as well as a keen sense for markets, the meticulous worker set to work, began to understand NürnbergMesse better and better, and grew into her tasks of acquiring and supporting customers for the exhibition centers in Nuremberg and worldwide. Even back then, it became clear that Italy was the “numero uno” in NürnbergMesse's ranking of international exhibitor nations at the Nuremberg exhibition center.

First decade: The bond grows stronger

True to her motto, “Once you start working at trade fairs, you stay,” Calcaterra, a trade fair professional, got off to a flying start. She became an indispensable link between the export-oriented Italian market and the NürnbergMesse Group, acting as a contact person for all matters concerning Italian customers who wanted to participate in trade fairs as exhibitors and guests.
As if that weren't enough work, she also represented the Spielwarenmesse toy fair from the beginning of her involvement with NürnbergMesse until her departure. Calcaterra always found balance in her busy workday through her passion for golf and her love of Italian food. There is said to be no good restaurant in Milan that she does not know.
Then came 2008 – a year that will remain special to her in many ways. On the one hand, there was the launch of her “fiera favorita” CHILLVENTA: “Renowned Italian exhibitors occupied around 6,900 square meters at the premiere of the trade fair, a great success and reward for a year and a half of work,” says Calcaterra.  On the other hand, there was the retirement of her long-time companion and mentor Marcello Raille: “I owe a lot of my experience to him.” When the decision to establish a NürnbergMesse subsidiary in Italy was made almost simultaneously, Stefania Calcaterra did not have to think twice: “I'm in.” In 2009, she became the founding managing director and thus the face of NürnbergMesse in Italy.

The completion: bringing together what belongs together

“In Stefania, NürnbergMesse found the best Italian managing director they could have wished for,” says Jacqueline Poppe from the Netherlands representative office, who started at NürnbergMesse at almost the same time as her. She not only sees Stefania Calcaterra as a great role model, but also describes her as a “mother figure for the entire team in Italy.”
From then on, her responsibilities included training, supporting, and motivating employees, as well as having a say in strategy and financial responsibility for the Italian branch. But it wouldn't be Stefania Calcaterra if she hadn't thrown herself into another labor-intensive adventure: developing a new project and adding it to the portfolio. “Focus on PCB,” the trade fair for printed circuit boards, was launched in 2022.

The bottom line: Italy is “numero uno” in Nuremberg

The results of the Calcaterra era are impressive: around 1,900 exhibiting companies and 20,000 specialist businesses from Italy can now be found at Nuremberg trade fairs every year. The country clearly ranks first among exhibitors, while among visitors it alternates with Austria at the top. During her tenure, a total of 25,762 exhibitors and over 200,000 visitors came from Italy. And under her representation, 3,520 exhibitors from Italy participated in the Toy Fair.
The all-female team at NürnbergMesse Italy currently comprises 13 employees. They were and are the pride of Stefania Calcaterra: “Their team spirit and commitment are unparalleled.” She herself will never be able to completely stop being a trade fair person – even after her departure, she intends to continue supporting “Focus on PCB” for another two years.
When asked how to be and remain successful in the industry, she says: “It's not machines or platforms, but always people who drive change. I do everything from the gut – it's emotions, I'm Italian through and through and very customer-oriented.”

With her passion and intuition, Stefania Calcaterra made a mark on the trade fair business far beyond Italy's borders.

Danny D'Alessandro, a law graduate and Executive MBA holder, brings over 15 years of experience in the trade fair and fashion industry to his new role as her successor. He takes over from Stefania Calcaterra at a well-run company in downtown Milan that is filled with a passion for trade fairs and an unparalleled sense of service quality.
