A central platform for future-oriented topics relevant to everyday life in the skilled trades

The German skilled trades sector aims to tackle the digital transformation together. One venue for this is the new “Zukunftsraum” at NürnbergMesse, which opened its doors for the first time during the FENSTERBAU FRONTALE and HOLZ-HANDWERK trade fair duo. This new format brings businesses and suppliers together, facilitating direct dialogue in the search for practical solutions.

Improvement potential in the German skilled trades sector exists, according to the Bitkom Study 2025. Although 85 percent of businesses use at least one digital service, 62 percent use messenger services, and one in three regularly holds online meetings, companies rate their own level of digitalization at an average school grade of 3.0. Only 4 percent are already using artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition, the study identifies hurdles such as a shortage of skilled workers (75 percent), IT security (60 percent), and the need to increase employees’ digital competence (76 percent). Many businesses are traditionally structured, which can complicate or delay the implementation of new technologies. Demographic change, business succession, and new work models pose further challenges for the skilled trades sector.

"Zukunftsraum": Solutions for pressing problems

“The "Zukunftsraum" is intended to be the central platform where future topics are bundled, made visible, and brought to life,” says Phillip Blass, Director Exhibitions at NürnbergMesse. “With this, we are sending a clear signal,” adds Heiko Fischer from 100 PROZENT DIGITAL, a long-standing partner of the trade fair and co-organizer of the Future Space. It was important to him to create a place where businesses and providers can come together to find solutions that truly help in everyday operations: “From digitalization and AI to skilled workers and leadership.”

The idea was implemented for the first time at the trade fair duo in March. It featured more than 30 practical presentations on a wide range of topics, a fully digital office as a best-practice example, and a networking area where entrepreneurs could deepen their knowledge and discuss problems with digitally experienced colleagues as well as experts.

From Expert Knowledge to Practical Application

Topics from real-world practice were addressed – topics that sparked interest among many owners of skilled trade businesses. For example, computer scientist Andreas Weber presented his measurement app, a tool for carpenters, joiners, window manufacturers, and installers. It enables mobile recording and documentation of measurements for windows, doors, and insect screens, with the data transferred directly into the central ERP system.

A great deal of time can also be saved through digital and automated accounting, including one‑click data exchange with tax advisors or the tax office. Tobias and Antonia Wagner, both carpenters from the greater Nuremberg area, explained how this works, as they already master the system inside out.

Julian Jehn from Jehn & Peters was able to draw on his extensive experience from years of working with craft, industrial, and construction companies. He shared numerous tips on how to optimize job postings so that they are seen, clicked on, and read with attention.

FeuerTrutz, GaLaBau, Chillventa: The Format Continues to Grow

The premiere of the "Zukunftsraum" at FENSTERBAU FRONTALE and HOLZ-HANDWERK was a great success, and plans are already underway to further expand the format. According to Heiko Fischer: “In 2026, there will also be a "Zukunftsraum" at FeuerTrutz,GaLaBau, and Chillventa – and additional formats in 2027.” The goal is also to continue the exchange beyond the trade fairs, support it with further digital formats and events, and bring lasting impulses into the businesses.
