Pet trade fair makes Brazilian hearts beat a little faster

Brazil's pet industry, the third largest in the world, comes together at Pet South America.

They are known as Billy, Marley or Madonna. Some are named after footballers like Ronaldo or Neymar. Creativity knows no bounds when it comes to naming dogs, cats or mice. There’s a pet living in just under half of all Brazilian households. At more than 52 million, the number of pets in Brazil exceeds the number of children under the age of 14 (more than 44 million). So it’s no surprise that the largest pet trade fair in South America – Pet South America – is held in São Paulo.

Ideal gathering place for pet sector experts

The pet and veterinary market is booming worldwide – but particularly in Brazil. The Brazilian pet industry generated sales equivalent to around €5 million in 2015 and is growing annually by 7.6%. In an international comparison, this puts Brazil in third place behind the USA and Great Britain. This positive development makes a platform for knowledge-sharing between the individual industry players all the more important. So every year, vets, animal breeders, biophysicists, scientists and specialists in pet retailing assemble at Pet South America.

Visitors and exhibitors forge contacts for future partnerships, discuss current developments in the sector and learn about the latest trends, technologies and products. The topics covered range from animal nutrition, fish farming, hygiene, beauty and health to accessories and services. Visitors travel a long way to attend the event: Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and the USA are just some of the more than 20 countries represented. In addition to the exhibition, the congress programme offers an even more in-depth exchange of information. In the “Knowledge Area”, Brazilian and international experts swap experiences and the latest insights. Visitors and exhibitors can also attend presentations on business management and entrepreneurship.

Positive trend continues

In 2017, Pet South America exceeded all expectations. With 21,000 visitors it saw an increase in numbers of 6% over the previous year. More than 300 exhibitors showcased their products on a display area of around 13,000 m². João Paulo Picolo, CEO of NürnbergMesse Brasil, was delighted by this development: “We can say without exaggeration that the trade fair has forged a new path and offers a unique environment for establishing business relationships. The congress programme provides the opportunity to explore the latest advances in veterinary medicine. We are going to expand the trade fair and congress even further next year.”

The next Pet South America will take place from 16 – 18 August 2018 in the São Paulo Expo Center.
